— House News —
  • Congratulations to the West House Executive Board as elected in our first elections:
Chair: Noah Manning ’17
Co-Chair: Ryan Monasch ’19
Exec members: Sam Stern ’19, Tim Holman ’20
Historian (appointed): Alexis Colbert ’19

We also had a few write-in candidates who received one vote each in the election. For these and any others in the House, a reminder that all West House members are welcome to come, participate, and vote in Exec meetings and contribute to the governance of the House community
  • West House is looking for 2-4 passionate, committed students to coordinate a Social Justice Event in honor of MLK Day!

As we look forward to the Winter, West House will nominate a Social Justice Programming Team to take part in the MLK Day events this January.

Whatever the format of the event (art installation, small group discussions, poster sessions, plays, spoken word, dance, debate, or all of the above), the program should
    • Focus on social justice (in all its many forms and formats)

    • Be primarily student-produced
    • Attract broad attention by House members • Be interactive and experiential in some way

Social justice Program Teams will be honored at a celebration dinner with noted Social Justice Advocate and senior administrators who will recognize the programs

    – House participation rate

    – Intellectual sophistication

    – Creativity

    – Impact on furthering social justice

The funding available is $1,000 per House so there are plenty of resources to make you vision a reality!

Please send your ideas to Ryan.C.Hickox@dartmouth.edu and Darby.L.Wiggins@dartmouth.edu

  • We would like to encourage all of you to suggest ideas for House activities going into the Winter (some recent suggestions have included a House ski trip, a cappella concerts at our residence, sustainability events, IM hockey and basketball, to name a few). The Exec will be continuing discussions over break and look forward to an exciting Winter term for the House. We’re mainly limited by our imaginations, so please send us your ideas!
  • For those of you on campus over breakwe’re planning to host some get-togethers at our residence, so please keep an eye out for invitations!

— Highlights of Fall Term 2016

This Fall in West House has featured some great highlights, and now is a good time to reflect on our first term as a House community:
  • The House Kickoff BBQ and concert in September was a great way to get the community together
  • We had  engaging and interesting House Teas with Dartmouth faculty Pati Hernandez and Marlene Heck
  • The West House first-years got together for the pre-bonfire Sweeps at Homecoming, followed by a fun House tailgate the next morning at the game
  • The West House soccer team made it to the finals of the IM House Championship
  • Our first annual Fellows Dinner brought dozens of our affiliated faculty, staff, and students together for a delicious meal at our residence
  • House members got together in the Hyphen for Debates and Election Night during this presidential election season, as well as a fascinating discussion on the election co-hosted by Palaeopitus
  • Resident Fellows and Resident Experts offered weekly guidance and academic support
  • West House sponsored about a dozen free trips to shows at the HOP
  • The House hosted other academic, social and cultural events (game night, study abroad session, Open Mic, hiking trip, etc.)
  • Most importantly, students, faculty, and staff are beginning to live and work together as part of a long-term continuous community.

Looking forward to building on a great start for an even better 2017!

  • Our first elections to the West House Executive Board for Winter and Spring 2017 will take place over the weekend of Nov 12 and 13 and will be run online. Students will be elect a Chair, a Co-Chair along with the remainder of the Exec, who will then assume various House leadership roles (such as first-year reps, treasurer, programming chair, IM coordinator, etc.) once the Board convenes. We are the first House to be directly electing student leadership and look forward to building strong student governance.

If you’re interested in running for a leadership position in the House please feel free to contact Prof. Hickox at Ryan.C.Hickox@dartmouth.edu
  • We had a great Homecoming weekend! The West House ’20s got together in Fahey Hall before the Sweeps, and we had a lovely tailgate on Saturday — despite the weather, we had at least 200 people come by and served over 100 breakfast sandwiches! (Many thanks to House Admin Pamela Duffy and staff affiliate Jeremy Lambeth who are clearly the best cooking team in the Upper Valley.) Lastly we had an enjoyable hike up Gile Mountain on Sunday — thanks to our own Matt West and the DOC for organizing!

It’s Homecoming weekend! Prior to the Bonfire on Friday night, the West House first years will gather at 7pm in Fahey Ground Floor for the pre-“sweeps” “spirit station”. (Since we’re on the traditional sweeps route, we have the advantage of being able to all gather as a House before the Bonfire, rather than being spread around in the first-year clusters.)

First-years should meet up with their FYRE UGAs and head over to Fahey for 7pm. All Westians are invited to come down and join for pizza and music prior to the Bonfire. We’ll also have some hot chocolate and snacks in Fahey after the Bonfire, so stop by and warm up afterward.
At 6pm on Friday, the House Professor’s Residence we will be hosting an alumni reception for the Class of 1962 (who generously funded your House Professor’s Faculty Fellowship a couple years ago). They’d love to meet with some students, so if you’d like to get to know some of Dartmouth’s distinguished alums and hear about some of Dartmouth’s history, please email Ryan.C.Hickox@dartmouth.edu.
