dartshield text.83x83Dartmouth College, a member of the Ivy League, is a private, four-year, coeducational undergraduate college with graduate schools of business, engineering and medicine and 16 graduate programs in the arts and sciences. Dartmouth is the nation’s ninth-oldest college, founded in 1769. Its 200-acre main campus features state-of-the-art academic facilities including the new Berry Library, the Hood Museum of Art, the Hopkins Center for the Arts, and the Rauner Special Collections Library.

Dartmouth traces its history in polar science to Vilhjalmur Stefansson (1879-1962), Arctic explorer, scholar and founder of Dartmouth’s Northern and Polar Studies program. The Stefansson Collection on Polar Exploration located at Dartmouth is one of the premier collections on the history of the Arctic regions and Antarctica.

Dartmouth has excellent meeting and computing facilities and a wireless computer network links the entire campus. Most of the ASSW meetings will be hosted in the Haldeman Center, home of the Dickey Center’s Institute of Arctic Studies.

Dickey logoThe John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, named in honor of Dartmouth’s twelveth president, John Dickey, aims to ensure that a rigorous understanding of international concerns is a vital part of the Dartmouth experience. Dickey also held a special interest in the north and this is now embodied in the Dickey Center’s Institute of Arctic Studies. The Institute acts to facilitate faculty and student research, teaching, and the understanding of issues facing high latitude regions.

CRREL_Shield-rgb_transCRREL, located in Hanover since 1961, is the nation’s leading research facility dedicated to understanding the science and engineering of cold environments. CRREL conducts a broad range of basic and applied research, from the study of snow and ice, to cold regions engineering research. Much of CRREL’s work is in collaboration with international partners.
