Classroom Types


All classroom types in CRR are designed to meet the same core capabilities and goals. However, they are tailored to their specific uses. For instance, lecture halls feature larger projectors and projection screens, as well as distinct furniture requirements.

Core Capabilities

Presentation
Present from the classroom computer or presenter-provided laptop or wirelessly from any participant's laptop or mobile device.

Class Capture
Schedule recordings of the class for later review in Canvas.

Streaming
Stream the class meeting or event in real-time for remote viewers.

Conferencing
Bring an offsite guest into the class or event via Zoom conferencing.

Design Goals

Refreshed rooms will be:

  • User-focused, featuring design-centered interfaces for intuitive operation, clear and accessible instructions, comprehensive training materials, and ergonomic considerations to enhance comfort and usability.
  • Ensure a consistent and familiar user experience across all rooms, creating a reliable and replicable teaching environment.
  • Enhance reliability by deploying robust, resilient technology and durable furniture, with a commitment to consistent, iterative maintenance.

Developed and maintained by Thayer and Dartmouth ITC, OpenAV empowers Dartmouth to independently manage and maintain its own AV systems. This reduces reliance on external vendors while increasing the adaptability and reliability of the technology.

Furniture and Finishes

The CRR program rigorously implements furniture and finish standards across classrooms to maintain a consistent and high-quality learning environment. Refresh updates are tailored to the current condition of each classroom, meaning not all refreshes will include every option. The goal of CRR is to ensure that the furniture, carpet, lighting, and paint in every classroom meet Dartmouth's modern, design-focused baseline, thereby fostering a comfortable and focused teaching environment. Some rooms may necessitate more extensive renovations, including demolition and construction work, such as installing new ceilings and other structural enhancements.


Seminar

Up to 26 Seats

  • Supports roundtable discussions and small class lectures.
  • Mobile tablet-arm chairs or 2-person tables and chairs.
  • Small, flat-floor room with a writing surface on at least one wall.
  • Smaller seminar rooms may have a flat panel display instead of a projector and projection screen.
  • Larger seminar rooms may have a dedicated classroom computer.

Standard

20-80 Seats

  • Supports lectures, full class discussions, and non-technology-enhanced group activity.
  • Easily reconfigurable, flat-floor classroom for 20-80 participants.
  • Mobile tablet-arm chairs or 2-person tables and chairs.
  • Multiple writing surfaces around the classroom.
  • Dedicated classroom computer.

Group Learning

35-80 Seats

  • Supports lectures, full class discussions, and technology-enhanced group activity.
  • Dedicated team displays and writing surfaces.
  • Reconfigurable, flat-floor classroom for 35-80 participants.
  • Mobile tablet-arm chairs or 2-person tables and chairs.
  • Dedicated classroom computer.

Demonstration

20-80 Seats

  • Supports lectures and image magnified/projected physical demonstrations.
  • Mobile tablet-arm chairs or 2-person tables and chairs.
  • Multiple writing surfaces around the classroom.
  • Additional technology: demonstration classrooms may have other specialized equipment such as demonstration cameras.

Lecture Hall

80-300 Fixed-Seats

  • Typically 80-300 fixed seats on tiers.  
  • Supports lectures, some work in pairs or non-technology-enhanced group work, in addition to conferences and events.
  • Enhanced technology services: designed for user-managed hybrid events with capacity for staffed events.
  • Dedicated classroom computer.
  • Additional features: lecture hall classrooms may have other specialized equipment such as production quality lighting and finishes to present Dartmouth to an external audience.
