A group for Asian/Asian-American students is being organized for Fall Term by Da-Shih Hu and Sarah Chung, counselors from Counseling & Human Development. It will focus on issues students encounter related to being Asian or Asian-American within the Dartmouth community and will give students an opportunity to discuss their experiences and learn about others’ experiences in a safe setting that facilitates students’ sharing, connecting, and understanding more about what being Asian/Asian-American means to them.
Topics in the previous group have included Asian activism, stereotypes, racism, body image, emotional expressiveness, and mental health.
The group will meet weekly during the term, probably starting the second week of the term, contingent on enough students being able to make the meeting time. Possible times for the group are 3-4 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, and 4-5 p.m. on Tuesday or Thursday.
To aid in the connection of the group, students are asked to commit to coming to all or nearly all of the meetings, and members will not be added after the third week of the term. In the initial meeting the members will decide on topics of interest, which will structure the general areas of discussion for the rest of the groups.
If you would like to join this group or know of any students who would be interested in joining such a group, please email Da-Shih Hu at da-shih.hu@dartmouth.edu .
The Asian/Asian-American at Dartmouth group will offer students a different way to explore Asian-ness from other currently available activities on campus. If you’re looking for such an opportunity consider joining us!
