Mac OS Upgrades

Before you upgrade – information about upgrading Mac OS

Have a current backup your data

Be sure you have at least 30 gb free space on your computer.

Check that your computer is compatible https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212551

Run Disk Utility, available in Applications > Utilities:
  • Select your internal drive from the list at the left (it’s often called Macintosh HD)
  • Click the First Aid tab at the top of the window and run First Aid
  • If all if OK and there are no issues, then you’re ready to run the upgrade. If issues are found, please contact me (james.f.graham@dartmouth.edu) or ITC at services.dartmouth.edu before proceeding.

Be sure your current operating system is up to date.

Verify that your applications are compatible with the new operating system.

The computer needs to be connected to power if it’s a laptop.

Disconnect any devices except for your mouse, keyboard and display.

Shut your computer down, then restart

Open System preferences > Software Update to download and install the upgrade.

**Note** the upgrade can take an hour or more and your computer will restart several times. If your display is dark, wait. You ultimately will see your login screen when the upgrade is finished.
