Migrate Mac User Account to New Computer

If you’re hoping to move a user account to a new computer and want to include applications and settings, the best method is to use Migration Assistant. Apple provides instructions for that here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204350

If you just want to move the user account and only the data associated with that account, you can follow these steps. You can also follow these steps for the user data and then use Migration Assistant to transfer applications and settings:

  1. Set up the new Mac by creating an administrator account: Go through Setup Assistant and, when you are asked who is going to use the computer, give the name Local Admin and continue to create that user account, skipping the steps associated with Apple ID.
  2. Once the Local Admin account is set up, you can now copy the user data (Jane Doe) from the old computer.
    1. Connect a thunderbolt cable between the new and old computer and restart the old computer in target mode. (Hold down the ‘t’ key while the computer is starting up.)
    2. The old computer’s hard drive will appear as an external disk on the new machine.
    3. Copy Jane Doe’s account folder (probably called ‘janedoe’) from \Users on the old computer to \Users on the new computer. This copy will take a while if there’s a lot of data.
  3. Once the copy is complete, go to System Preferences – Users & Groups, and add a new account with the full name ‘Jane Doe’ and account name ‘janedoe’ to match the name of the folder you copied.
  4. The system will recognize that the user folder already exists and will ask you if you want to use that folder. Say Yes.
