How Populism Missed Japan

Happy to announce the publication (in Asia-Pacific Review) of a new article, “Nationalist in a Liberal Order: How Populism Missed Japan.” In the essay I argue that though Japan is a leading country in the liberal international order, its policies have been consistently more nationalist (lingering trade barriers, non-tariff barriers, and strict immigration policies). As a result Japan has not experienced the populist backlash seen in other countries where trade and/or immigration policies were more liberal.
