About Mindful Dartmouth Initiative

We envision a campus and a world where all beings have the space to reflect more often, connect more deeply & kindly, and live from a place of meaning & purpose.

Laura Beth White,
Member of the Mindful Dartmouth Initiative

Who We are

Mindful Dartmouth Initiative (MDI) is an intentional, cross section of individuals and offices across the entire Dartmouth ecosystem committed to the centering of evidence-based mindfulness and contemplative practices as foundational to whole person education, development and wellbeing.

Our Vision

  • To create and sustain a campus culture of mindful resilience, authentic connection, and compassionate leadership to best prepare the lifelong learners of Dartmouth.
  • Build the skill-set, mind-set and heart-set to fully realize Dartmouth’s educational vision of “a vibrant, inclusive learning environment where students and faculty respond with research and innovation to the most pressing challenges of our time.

Our aim is to create a campus culture where mindfulness education and skill-building can be engaged through:

How We Do It

Inclusive

The initiative will incorporate and be respectful of diverse perspectives, experiences, and worldviews from the outset, and take into consideration, and be welcoming, of all participants

Integrity

We will work to honor the historical, religious and cultural traditions in which mindfulness is derived from.
We will avoid commodification of a process that is deeply spiritual while also creating multiple secular and non-secular opportunities in which Dartmouth community members can participate

Accessibility

MDI will ultimately create an ecosystem of mindfulness at Dartmouth, where all community members can have easy access to these resources in an integrative way

Autonomy

The Dartmouth community will retain freedom of choice at all times including programmatic participation, involvement with individual activities, and sharing of information or experiences

Why We Do It

MDI helps address the personal, communal, national, and global psychosocial stressors that threaten physical and emotional well-being, academic and workplace performance, and achievement of our aspirational educational mission.

Mindfulness-based interventions strengthen emotional and social intelligence (ESCI), the necessary skills to cultivate personal resilience, foster healthy relationships, build communities of belonging, and address the world’s most pressing needs
