Riots and Plague; The Byzantine Empire in the Age of Justinian:
The Byzantine Empire, or the “Eastern Roman Empire,” thrived long past the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century CE. The empire’s first great leader was Emperor Justinian I, who ruled from 527 through 565 CE and significantly expanded Byzantine wealth, influence, and land control in that time. However, his reign was also fraught with peril, including riots, plagues, and other authoritarian actions that bred resentment among his people. Though the larger empire had many relative rises and falls across the over-1000 years of its tenure, the reign of Justinian I marked a particular period of glory in Byzantine and Eastern Roman history.
United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA): Double Delegation
The United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is tasked with the promotion of international cooperation over outer space. It supports efforts of member states to develop space-related technology and pursue space exploration. Some of the most pressing issues UNOOSA faces include the partitioning of space resources and increasing militarization of space.
International Court of Justice (ICJ):
The International Court of Justice committee will dive into two critical issues shaping modern international law. The first topic examines the complex legal dimensions of Turkey’s 1974 invasion of Cyprus, exploring the conflict’s roots and lasting consequences for sovereignty and territorial integrity. The second topic addresses the legality of bioweapons, seeking an advisory opinion on the international community’s stance against the use and threat of such weapons. Delegates will have the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking debates on these topics, each posing profound implications for peace and security in a global context.
