Mission Statement

The Network for Women in Sports’s (NWiS) mission is to support, empower, and connect self-identifying women in athletics through intentional learning and genuine connection. By uplifting individual identities, experiences, and stories, NWiS aims to powerfully shape the landscape of female leaders at Dartmouth and beyond.

Women can come together to learn about navigating life post Dartmouth while encouraging and inspiring one another in an inclusive environment that reflects a broad range of professional interests, sports affiliations, and identities.

About

Network for Women in Sports is an official Dartmouth organization formed by a group of women athletes. We have noticed over our time at Dartmouth that corporate recruitment events and professional development clubs and opportunities often occur during practice times, and these events often overlook the specific experiences of women in our respective professional journeys.

We, the founders, realized that there was an opportunity within the athletic community to create a place for women athletes to come together and learn about navigating life post Dartmouth while encouraging and inspiring one another as a team. Our niche is ‘women in sports’ because our cohort has unique time pressures and life experiences, but also has unique talents and opportunities.

Our group will meet for special events later in the evening during school terms. This is after practices, team meetings, and other general commitments that we have. The first key component of our meetings is a keynote speaker. We seek speakers who can engage our community in conversation while instructing us and sharing wisdom. Topics will range from personal finance, finding purpose and leveraging your strengths, interviewing strategies, networking and leveraging alums, professional dress codes, mental health, body image, to navigating male-dominated and/or majority-white professional spaces, and many more.

The second key component of our meetings are connection and opportunities for networking. Meetings will alternate between keynote speakers and opportunities for social connection and intentional, structured conversations.

Underpinning all of our work is a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Our community consists of a multitude of professional interests, sports affiliations, and personal identities. Through careful consideration of speakers and topics, we seek to create a space that is inclusive and productive. Topics and group prompts will generate action-oriented dialogue about inequalities and biases experienced in sport as well as in professional and personal life.
