Teach-In: The Arts of Care, 2/22-2/23

How can the praxis of creativity and care generate new ecologies of flourishing for all members of our campus community?

The organizers of the Promiscuous Care and Performance Institute warmly invite the Dartmouth community and the broader public to a Teach-in on the Arts of Care held on February 22-23, 2024.  The Teach-In will feature Queer Black Troublemaker and Black Feminist Love Evangelist Alexis Pauline Gumbs, renowned performance artist Josefina Báez, Dartmouth professor and the Director of the Institute for Black Intellectual and Creative Life Kimberly Juanita Brown, as well as Institute fellows Misty De Berry (NYU), Kianna Middleton, and Alisa Swindell, in addition to Dartmouth Postdoctoral Fellow K. Bailey Thomas. The Teach-In will feature a performance workshop, a panel discussion on Black feminist thought, a session on Black feminist care in higher education, a meditation workshop, and a presentation on the Hood special exhibit, “And I’m Feeling Good: Relaxation and Resistance.” The Teach-In will conclude with a public conversation between Gumbs and Báez and will also feature participation by our student fellows. Thursday, Feb. 22

  • 12-1pm PM: Fellows and students participant lunch (Dartmouth Hall, The Leslie Center for the Humanities)
  • 1:15-2:45 PM: Black feminist care and mental health in higher education: A discussion led by K. Bailey Thomas (Dartmouth Hall, The Leslie Center for the Humanities)
  • 4:30-6:30 PM: Josefina Báez performance workshop, Dartmouth Hall 105*
  • 6:30-7pm: Pizza provided at the Leslie Center (Dartmouth Hall, Leslie Center)
  • 7:00-8:30 PM: Panel discussion, "Black Feminist Thought and the Arts of Care." How to create, think, and love with radical care? Join us for a conversation on the collective wisdom of Black feminism with Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Kimberly Juanita Brown, Misty De Berry, Kianna Middleton, and Alisa Swindell, and moderated by K. Friday, Feb. 23

  • 2:00-3:00 PM: Presentation on the Hood Museum exhibit, “And I’m Feeling Good: Relaxation and Resistance,” led by curator and Institute fellow Alisa Swindell, The Hood Museum
  • 3:30-4:15 PM: Reflection and meditation led by Misty De Berry (Dartmouth Hall 105)
  • 4:30-6:00 PM: "The Alchemy of Arts and Activism: A Public Conversation with Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Josefina Báez." Join renowned performance artist Josefina Báez and acclaimed writer, activist, and poet Alexis Pauline Gumbs for a conversation on the alchemic creativity of art and activism. Student fellows who have participated in Báez’s three-day workshop* will also reflect on their experience.  (Dartmouth Hall 105). (This event will be hybrid. *Leading up to the Teach-In, Báez will hold two performance workshops on 2/20 and 2/21 on her methodology of care and practice that she calls performance autology. These two workshops are reserved for our student fellows and prior registrants; the third workshop on 2/22 as listed in the schedule is open to everyone.
