Want to learn how to wrangle data in maps and GIS software? Come to Research Computing’s mapping and GIS workshop on Monday, January 30th, 2017 from 2:00pm – 3:30pm in the 37 Dewey Field Road Instructional Center (first floor) to learn more. We’ll use various tools to bring datasets in mapping and GIS software, and make a map for presentation using the data with existing map base layers. We will also discuss sources of geospatial data and digital map making techniques.

No experience is necessary to attend this Research Computing workshop.

A new scholarly publication that some of you might be interested in was published recently in Freshwater Biology, Razeng, E., Morán-Ordóñez, A., Brim Box, J., Thompson, R., Davis, J. and Sunnucks, P. (2016), A potential role for overland dispersal in shaping aquatic invertebrate communities in arid regions. Freshw Biol, 61: 745–757. doi:10.1111/fwb.12744: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/fwb.12744/full  The authors used a neighborhood analysis technique in ArcGIS 10.1 and the ecodist package in the R statistical software program.

GIS Lite: Tools for Easy Mapping Workshop

Tuesday, December 6th, 10am - 12pm, we will host a GIS Lite workshop that will cover some basic mapping and GIS tools. These lightweight tools allow access to simple geographic analysis, without having to learn a full-function GIS system. Lucinda Hall from the Dartmouth College Library and Steve Gaughan from Research Computing will be presenting.

We will cover Social Explorer, ArcGIS Online and other tools as time allows. With these tools we will look at US Census Bureau data, imagery, and cultural statistics. We will also introduce and review other mapping sites listed on the Web GIS Research Guide.

The workshop will be held in the 37 Dewey Field Road Building's Instructional Center on the First Floor. From Baker Library, head north towards the 1 Rope Ferry Road Building and Thomas Hall. 37 Dewey Field Road is at the north end of the Maynard Street parking lot.
