Joining an existing publication
If you are a writer, artist, or photographer looking to publish your own work in one of Dartmouth's student journals or magazines, look through the list of current publications. When you find one that fits your work, follow the instructions on the publication's website or contact the editors to submit content.
If you are interested in working on a publication behind the scenes, contact the current editors and ask how to get involved.
Starting a new publication
If you would like to start something new, first consult the list of active publications whether there is already one that covers the type of content that you're interested in. If you still want to start your own from scratch, see Best Practices for Student-led Publishing, a practical guide to student publishing at Dartmouth; this will tell you the process for creating a new journal or magazine. Also consult the information from the Council on Student Organizations About Student Publications.
Some considerations for new publications:
- Dartmouth's long history includes many now-dormant student newspapers, journals, and magazines. Often you can revive one of these titles instead of starting something completely new. Consult the list of past publications to see if there is one that might be a good fit.
- While you are not required to be recognized by COSO to produce content, the funding and other support they offer may be valuable. Follow the instructions to create a new student organization to get your publication recognized. (This recognition is limited to undergraduate students.)
- If you have questions about copyright, contact the Scholarly Communication, Copyright, and Publishing Department or check out our Copyright guide.
