Mentorship
A critical component of each fellowship program is faculty mentorship. TDI comprises a cross-departmental group of faculty and associated staff who conduct research on medical care and its improvement. TDI core faculty include representation from many clinical and social science disciplines with particular expertise in health policy; comparative effectiveness research; the use of administrative databases for measuring medical care; decision analysis; health systems improvement; and patient preferences research. Mentors provide topical expertise and insights/feedback on grant proposals. They are also critical in ensuring the success of the fellow’s Individual Development Plan (IDP).
Applicants should review TDI faculty profiles and speak to fellowship coordinators to identify potential faculty mentors who might align with their research interests.
The National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity and the University of Wisconsin are thought leaders on academic mentorship and are excellent sources of information and tools for both mentors and mentees.
Mentorship guides are available for faculty mentors for the Class of ’74 Health Equity Scholars and DocPath fellows:
Research Resources
All fellows have access to a suite of resources, inclusive of an experienced support team, to jump-start, grow and sustain their research aims. For researchers interested in using administrative claims data (e.g., national Medicaid and Medicare claims), the team will help develop and submit data use agreements to securely access the data on CMS’ Virtual Data Research Center (VRDC). Researchers interested in developing surveys or implementing mixed methods approaches are encouraged to work with experts in TDI’s Center for Program Design and Evaluation (CPDE) at various stages of a project, both pre- and post-award.
Administrative Resources
Budget development is a key skill for researchers looking to apply for academic grants; below is a template geared toward our faculty fellows but may be modified for use by all fellows seeking to acquire budget skills.
