Moving Dartmouth Forward (MDF)

Philip Hanlon standing in a large auditorium announcing the Moving Dartmouth Forward Plan in 2015.

In January 2015, President Hanlon announced the Moving Dartmouth Forward Plan. The Plan includes a number of measures to put Dartmouth at the forefront in creating higher expectations of college students while strengthening Dartmouth's longstanding commitment to leadership in teaching and learning. The Plan was the outcome of the process launched by President Hanlon in March 2014 to end high-risk drinking and sexual assault on campus and to create a greater sense of inclusivity.

Important hallmarks of the launch of Moving Dartmouth Forward were the designation of elements to specific departments and individuals, the immediate formation of working groups, and the stated expectation of transparency and accountability.

Inclusive Excellence (IE)

In February 2016, Dartmouth announced an effort to increase inclusion and diversity. Three working groups - one each focused on faculty, students, and staff - studied existing data on diversity and inclusion at Dartmouth, defined goals to measure progress, and established mechanisms to ensure accountability and transparency. In May 2016 these groups made their recommendations to an Executive Committee for both short- and long-term actions to achieve a more inclusive and diverse campus. The Executive Committee, with input from alumni, in partnership with advancement, consolidated the working group recommendations into an Action Plan for Inclusive Excellence, shared with the community on May 27, 2016. This website tracks progress made against the goals laid out in that plan.

Campus Climate and Culture Initiative (C3I)

This is a diamond-shaped award given to C3I Ambassadors.

The Campus Climate and Culture Initiative (C3I) launched in 2019 and follows and expands upon the recommendations for institutions of higher education made in the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) report, Sexual Harassment of Women: Climate, Culture, and Consequences in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. In concert with Moving Dartmouth Forward and Inclusive Excellence, C3I is the third pillar in a comprehensive set of initiatives designed to create a more welcoming, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for all Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff.

Organized into five categories—campus climate, academic and professional development, recruitment, resources, and mandatory reporting—the steps below address every one of the higher education-specific recommendations made in the NASEM report.
