Now that you’ve thought about how different objects would feel in their appropriate contexts, consider again the Assyrian Reliefs.
Do they seem different to you now, or the same? Is it difficult to picture walking through a room with these figures flanking the walls? Would the faces emerge from the shadows in flickering torchlight? Would they feel imposing, or would they be a beautiful decoration? Both?
We’ve also seen that the journey an object takes from original site to museum gallery can impact what we see and what we know about it.
