![An earth-toned mosaic depicting a fish, peacock, lamb, bird, and shrub.](https://sites.dartmouth.edu/vsfd14/files/2021/01/edited-mosaic-581x1024.jpg)
This marble mosaic was originally located on the floor at a site in Northern Syria. As with many ancient objects, the complete history of this piece — the exact location or who made it — is not known. It is likely, though, that it dates to the Late Roman and Early Christian period, which gives some suggestion to its maker and meaning.
The fish is especially telling that this might have been an early Christian work. Does this mosaic remind you of any other works of art you have seen? What does it mean for work like this to have been installed on the floor?
