Asia’s Other Revisionist Power–best of 2017

Foreign Affairs honored my article, from their March/April issue, as one of their best articles from 2017. In this article, I argued that critics are right that China is trying to change the status quo in East Asia, by pursuing military modernization, altering the territorial status quo, and challenging US regional military predominance. But people often fail to appreciate the extent to which the United States is also a revisionist power. Since World War II, the United States has pursued a grand strategy aimed not at preservation of the status quo, but at the transformation of international relations into a liberal “zone of peace.”
