Benefit Dinner - Success!

Benefit Dinner – Success!

On Friday, February 17, GlobeMed at Dartmouth held a benefit dinner to help raise funds for our partner organization, the Kachin Women’s Association Thailand (KWAT).

The benefit dinner was a huge success; we raised over $1,000 from donations!

The eventful evening consisted of talks from global health specialist Christina Martin, government professor Stephen Brooks, and a performance from Dartmouth a cappella group Brovertones. Dinner was catered from local Korean-Japanese restaurant, Yama.

Ms. Martin spoke about her experiences working in Sudan as part of Médecins Sans Frontières. In particular, she highlighted the challenges that the South Sudanese faced in their daily lives, and the lack of healthcare access for an overwhelmingly large part of the population.

Professor Brooks shared his experiences traveling in Southeast Asia, a region which he said he has come to love. In his presentation, he encouraged everyone present to “visit Southeast Asia for its culture, its attractions, but above all, its people.” He also lauded GlobeMed’s and KWAT’s efforts at improving the lives of the refugees along the Thai-Burma border, explaining that NGOs are important because they provide social and humanitarian services in parts of the world where governments are unable or unwilling to help. Finally, Professor Brooks urged students to think hard about the problems plaguing Southeast Asia, as well as ways to resolve them.

In the weeks leading up to the benefit dinner, staff and executive board members of GlobeMed at Dartmouth worked hard to make the event a success. Logistics, food, decorations, finances, and venue layout were just some of the things that kept everybody busy.

GlobeMed at Dartmouth would like to thank the college, Professor Brooks, Ms. Martin, the Brovertones, staff members, volunteers, donors, as well as anyone who helped in one way or another. Thank you for making this event such a great success!
