Aug 27: First Day of English Lessons

Today we began our English instruction for the Kachin interns living at the KWAT intern house. KWAT recruited these interns from organizations, primarily Christian-based groups, in the Kachin State and has provided lodging, education and food for them for six months before they return to their communities for a two-year work commitment. In the current program, there are 10 female and 4 male interns.

In the morning, we and the interns went around a circle naming some of our favorite English words, which we wrote on the board and divided into categories. Then we talked about other words that fit in those categories and played some games asking questions by throwing a ball around. We then listed words like prepositions and helped the interns use them to form sentences. They became more confident as the morning went on.

For lunch, we ate with the interns, having sautéed morning glories and Kachin beef soup.

In the afternoon, we did some fun English activities with the interns. We listened to the songs “Good Time,” “Payphone,” and “Piano Man” and analyzed the lyrics. We also taught the interns to do the Cha-Cha Slide. We’re looking forward to seeing them again for more lessons!

We had another Thai lesson in the evening. Khruu O taught us about forming basic sentences and asking people their name and age.
