Day 50-55: Don’t Question Anything

Well, here we are. It’s the last night in Chiang Mai; our taxi is coming in 6 hours, 43 minutes, and 20 seconds. Hoon is safely in South Korea and Chicaiza is no longer our responsibility. It’s just Lisa and Tiki left, holding down the fort.

As a wrap-up for this long adventure, we have decided to share with you 25 things we have learned on our GROW trip.

1. Don’t question anything. Examples: Is this a staple in my fried rice? Is that woman mopping the rug? Is that dog purple? Wait, are all those dogs purple? Anything is possible in Thailand.

2. Mai knows all. Our partner contact, in addition to being a spitfire five-foot tall maverick, also has magical powers that keep us safe. And alive. Even Hoon.

3. Pepto bismol = bffl

4. Never go to Phuket.

5. Seriously, never go there.

6. Our partnership with KWAT is truly a thai that cannot be broken.

7. Hoon really loves his cat.

8. Website designing is not something that should be attempted by the faint of heart, or those prone to flipping tables and yelling “I JUST CAN’T EVEN” when things don’t go their way.

9. There are multiple stages of being “so done” before you “just can’t even.”

10. Sometimes when you just go out to have a good time, you end up honestly feeling so attacked right then.

11. Ants love computers. MY MAC IS NOT LITERALLY AN APPLE, MORONS.

13. Kachin food is so much better than Thai food.12. The Kachin Women’s Association Thailand is full of really cool and very busy people. Before this trip, we had no idea of the extent of their work along the China-Burma border. Through reading many of their reports, we were able to get a glimpse of just how many people they help.

14. How to open mangosteens and rambutans.

15. What sound Chicaiza makes when a lizard crawls up his pants.

16. “Medium spicy” is, in fact, too much for us.

17. Sometimes you just have to accept that setting up a PayPal account is not as easy as you thought it would be, and that it will probably take the rest

of your life. But it’s okay. Because that means you get to keep working with KWAT.

18. InDesign is not InDesire (ha).

19. Magnum ice cream. No explanation needed.

20. Peanut butter heals all wounds left unhealed by Magnum.

21. Your choice of doughnut says a lot about your personality.

22. There are more subdivisions of bananas in Kachin than there are in English.

23. KWAT has so many partners. Every week, there were new guests from different organizations who came for discussions and connections with KWAT.24. Selfie or it didn’t happen.

25. KWAT was our home away from home. We felt sad, lost, and hopeless in a city filled with people we didn’t know, and KWAT was our guiding light. Just kidding. Sort of. Less kidding than we would like to admit. But seriously, we are so lucky to have had this experience, and we can’t imagine having done it anywhere else.
