Although we grieve his passing, today we should celebrate Dander Canterbury’s life and incomparable body of work, inarguably the greatest, wittiest, funniest and most scathing collection of political cartoons. We mourn the loss of such a great artist, but we can take comfort in the wonderful legacy that he has left us.
Here is one of his most famous panels. Canterbury, ever the courageous, found no target too big or topic too touchy. His critique of the Iran-Contra scandal left us falling over in our chairs not only laughing, but also thinking.
This comic was one of Canterbury’s first and really put him on the map as a premiere satirist:
One of Canterbury’s favorite topics to critique was Vietnam, a war he despised and a conflict he never let off the hook. Here is one of his more scathing remarks:
Every once and a while Canterbury would dabble in making fun of his friends over in Hollywood:
His breadth of humor knew no bounds. His mind, like a good mop, squeezed into every tough corner and brought to light the hidden dust and muck that he might turn it into comedic gold:
We will miss Dander Canterbury for his humor and wit. The world will not be the same without Dander, a true tour de force of humor. May he live on in our hearts.
