Astronomy 2 student Fred Jackson is allegedly taking the course purely out of interest and not to fulfill any major or distributive requirements, sources with knowledge of the subject reported on Tuesday.
In an unprecedented display of academic curiosity, Jackson is said to be taking the popular introductory course to actually learn more about the workings of the universe, not to get a science distrib.
Jackson’s lack of exterior motive for enrolling in the course came as a shock to classmates and faculty.
“I was just trying to make small talk, so I asked Fred why he was taking the class,” Astro 2 student Eliza Sanders said. “When he said he just wanted to learn more about astronomy, I thought he was joking. I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
Jackson also told Sanders that he was still deciding whether to take the lab portion of the course, as he wanted to first read the syllabus and see if it seemed interesting.
“I’ve been teaching this class for 10 summers and have never seen anyone so genuinely interested in the material,” professor Nicholas Kepler said. “Maybe this means that someone will finally come to office hours.”
Jackson was not available for comment, reportedly because he was actually reading the textbook for one of his classes.
As of press time, additional reports have surfaced suggesting that Jackson is also taking Classics 4, “Classical Mythology” because of a sincere interest in mythological figures and texts.
