In a bold and privy campaign move, Congressman Beto O’Rourke spoke English for the vast majority of Wednesday’s first Democratic debate. According to political commentators, this striking move represents an effort by the O’Rourke campaign to reach out to white communities before the primary elections in 2020.
Fielding questions after the debate, O’Rourke’s campaign manager, Jen Dillon, told press, “Voters want a candidate that they can relate to and understand. It may surprise some that Beto spoke in English almost exclusively, but that’s part of his goal to get his truth out there.”
While many viewers were shocked that O’Rourke spoke just one language for the lion’s share of the debate, analysts remind us that a large portion of the democratic voter base is white and only understands English.
After O’Rourke’s success at speaking English in the debate, other candidates are expected to follow suit. This may prove a problem for Congressman John Delaney, who does not plan to say anything whatsoever in upcoming debates.
