Throughout the pandemic, a wave of people have updated their social media profile pictures to a selfie of themselves wearing a mask. However, recent reporting reveals that these people are entirely missing the point of a profile picture.
While scrolling on his phone, local man Benjamin Allen shared his thoughts to reporters:
“Wow, I wonder who this person on Instagram is? I think I recognize them. I sure hope there’s a convenient picture next to their username that will help me attach a face to this name,” said Allen, before being thoroughly disappointed.
“Oh yeah! I’m so glad you noticed!” said masked profile picture user Sabrina Decker, “I thought that having a masked profile picture would allow me to use my platform for good.”
Indeed, political and medical experts alike praise Decker’s wear-a-mask campaign. Decker’s message to her 1,005 followers, who are all friends, classmates, and acquaintances, have single-handedly delivered victory in the fight against anti-mask propaganda from far-right media.
At press time, Decker caught COVID-19 after partying despite putting on her mask for the picture she was tagged in that day.
