My essay for H-Diplo/ISSF argues that though Trump’s election served as a major shock to Japan, Trump has significantly backtracked from his campaign rhetoric and appears to be adopting the same policy in the US-Japan alliance as his predecessors. Though Japan could contribute much more to the alliance, it won’t be asked to. The US and Japan will continue to follow the pattern of the last several decades in which Japan has made gradual changes in capabilities and alliance roles.
