FAQ

Question: Do I need any statistics or sports analytics experience?

Answer: Not at all. Most club members started without any sports analytics experience and minimal statistics knowledge. Club members share a common interest and curiosity in explaining common trends in sports. Senior club members are available to assist you with any technical or sports analytics knowledge you might need to complete a project.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: Dartmouth Students can look out for a blitz on the Campus Events Listserv or email us personally at Dartmouth.Sports.Analytics@Dartmouth.edu with any questions.

Q: What courses do you recommend for students interested in sports analytics?

A: Students interested in sports analytics should take a statistics class, which are typically numbered 10 (MATH 10, ECON 10, etc.) and QSS 15. QSS 30.01: Sports Analytics is a good class to have under your belt if you're considering sports analytics in the long run, but besides that there is no set path. If you are interested in pursuing sports analytics, we recommend attending club meetings and you will gain skills in technical fields, teamwork, as well as hear advice from senior members.

Q: How does this club relate to the sports analytics course (QSS 30.01)?

A: Dartmouth Sports Analytics is separate from the Quantitative Social Science (QSS) course "Sports Analytics." While students in the club typically take the course at one point in their Dartmouth career, the course is not a requirement to conduct research for DSA or be an active club member. Most members have conducted research without the knowledge from the sports analytics course.
