WESTIANS IN THE NEWS

  • Congrats to Kaya Thomas ’17, who was featured on Huffington Post this week for her work creating We Read Too, an iPhone app that serves as a directory of hundreds of books showcasing characters of color.
  • WestHouse faculty affiliate Petra McGillen (German Studies) has a great article this week in the Observer about “fake news” in 19th Century  Germany and what it can tell us about the current media environment. She’ll be chatting with us at a House Professor’s Tea on May 12.

If you know of more accomplishments of West House members that we can highlight here, please be in touch!

A FAREWELL, AND A WELCOME

This week we said a bittersweet farewell to our Assistant Director, Darby Wiggins, who is moving south to take up an exciting new opportunity at the University of Mississippi. We are very grateful to Darby for her instrumental role in getting the West House community started this year. We’ll miss you Darby — you’ll forever be a Westian!

At the same time, we are delighted to welcome Lauren Oliver to the West House community. Lauren is currently the AD of Allen House, and through her graduate work she is an expert on residential houses and colleges around the country and the world. She’ll be overseeing the UGAs in West House this term – if you see Lauren please give her a warm welcome to the House!

House Professor’s Teas

Our next HP Tea will be This Friday, April 14 from 4:45 to 5:30pm, with Alix Fitzgerald ’07, for a discussion about entrepreneurship at the leading edge of the personal finance industry.

Alix Fitzgerald ’07 is a Senior Product Manager at Betterment, a company leading the market in automated “robo-advising” for investors, based in New York City.

Invite your student group to DINNER at the HP’S Residence!

Over the past term we’ve had a wonderful time hosting the West House first-year floors for dinner at the HP’s Residence on Webster Ave. This term we’d like to extend this to all student groups: For any Westian who is a member of a student group (musical group, sports team, activist group, outdoors club, anything!) and would like to extend a dinner invitation to your group (including all students, not just West Housemembers), please contact Ryan.C.Hickox@dartmouth.edu. (Note that the most we can host our residence is about 25 or 30). Looking forward to seeing you in our home!

Candidates must be 21+ and complete an hour of TIPS training — then are eligible for a fun job with a competitive hourly wage. If interested, please contact Pamela at Pamela.K.Duffy@dartmouth.edu.

WEST HOUSE APPAREL

For Spring term we’ll be doing an order for more House merchandise; current ideas are fleeces, hoodies, T-shirts, baseball hats, PJ pants, and blankets. Every Westian will be able to order the specific item and size you like. ORDER FORM AVAILABLE SOON!

HELP DESIGN THE OFFICIAL WEST HOUSE INSIGNIA!

(Please note the deadline for input is tomorrow, April 10 so if you have ideas please send them along as soon as you can.)
The time has come for the College to design a set of six official insignia to represent all the House Communities staring this fall. Towards this end, the West House Executive Board has begun accepting prototypes for the official West House Insignia – please send email to Ryan.C.Hickox@dartmouth.edu with the subject line “West House Insignia Ideas” and it will be passed to the Exec. Your submission can be a complete design or a sketch of a concept: feel free to use words where your artistic skills come up a bit short. Ideas that were submitted during the open call for input last spring have already been passed to the Executive Board and will be considered fully as part of this process.

The House Executive Board will review your submissions and create a portfolio containing the most promising ideas. This portfolio will be used as a starting point and inspiration for a professional design team charged with developing a coherent set of six insignia for the HouseCommunities. To help guide your creative process, please see this document with a few basic guidelines for the House Insignia plus some samples from other institutions. Please submit your ideas by Monday, April 10.

One final note, if you happen to like the design concept behind our interim “elm tree” insignia representing the majestic tree between Fahey and Russell Sage – please let us know that too! One possibility is that our official insignia could build on this idea.

BAKER-BERRY LIBRARY EXHIBIT ON HOUSE COMMUNITIES

For next academic year, Dartmouth Libraries (led in part by our West House Librarian, Laura Barrett) will be hosting an exhibit in Baker-Berry called “House Communities at Dartmouth: The First Year”. West House will have our own case and the opportunity to highlight all the activities and growth of community that we’ve had in this inaugural year. If you’re interested in joining our House Historian, Alexis Colbert ’19, in curating and developing the exhibit, please contact her at Alexis.R.Colbert.19@dartmouth.edu.

Free HOP tickets

West House has available free tickets for House members to attend world-class performances at the Hopkins Center each term. A full list of shows for Spring term is available here. If you’d like tickets, please contact Pamela at Pamela.K.Duffy@dartmouth.edu.
