Four days after the shooting of a teenager in Hanover, one person in your GroupMe has continued to listen to the Hanover Police scanner, group members report.
Though most people in your “Chem 5 Study Buddies 18F” GroupMe have begun to discuss topics unrelated to the shooting, Garrett Winder ’20 has not stopped posting regular updates from the online stream of the police scanner. While most of the updates are no longer related to Friday’s shooting, this has not deterred Winder from sharing every piece of information that he hears.
“We’ll be discussing how to analyze the titration that we did in lab, and all of a sudden Garrett will send a message saying, ‘Red SUV pulled over on Lyme Road’ or ‘Shoplifter at the Co-op – stay safe,’” fellow GroupMe member Annie Garcia ’21 said. “I appreciate his concern, but I feel like most of these updates aren’t related to anything.”
Garcia said that Winder recently sent a flurry of messages about a police chase on North Park Street, only to later explain that a bicycle policeman had been chasing a Hanover resident’s runaway Schnauzer.
“Sometimes I check the GroupMe to see if anyone figured out how to calculate the triple point of nitrogen, but Garrett will be doing his daily check-in to make sure that we’re all in a safe location,” Garcia said. “It’s nice of him to think about us, but I just want some help with the problem set.”
When asked for comment, Garrett initially responded with “reports of police congregating at Town Hall,” later clarifying that police were attending a community potluck dinner.
