Watching Oppenheimer in Japan

I enjoyed talking with the New York Times’s Motoko Rich about the opening of the film Oppenheimer in Japan. With Donald Trump’s political resurgence, with changes in the nuclear balance, we see growing uncertainty among America’s allies about the credibility of the US nuclear umbrella (especially in South Korea but also in Japan). The Japanese are grappling with the horrors of nuclear weapons – and yet the demands of deterrence – at a fascinating time.
