  • Dr. Wan-go Weng, the 95-years-old great-great-grandson of Weng Tonghe (1830-1904) and the most illustrious collector and connoisseur of Chinese art currently outside China, is reading Prof. Huang Dun’s poem manuscripts in the main hall of Baker Library at Dartmouth. 翁同龢(1830-1904)的五世孙、九十五岁高龄的翁万戈博士,正在达慕思大学贝克图书馆主厅品读黄惇教授的诗稿。翁万戈先生是当今海外最重要的中国文物收藏家与鉴赏家。3

This exhibition starts today in the Berry Main Street at Dartmouth College Library. The same exhibition was displayed in the United Nations Headquarters in New York City during August 27-30, 2013.

Chinese Calligraphy and Manuscript Art Starting on Friday, August 30

Thanks to the Education and Outreach Program of Dartmouth College Library and in particular, the exhibition designer Dennis Grady, Chinese Calligraphy and Manuscript Art will be on display in the main hall of Baker Library on August 30, Friday. The following selected calligraphy works of the Heart Sutra in five scripts, i.e., seal, clerical, standard, cursive and running scripts, were written by the exhibition curator, Dr. Wen Xing, Robert 1932 and Barbara Black Professor in Asian Studies at Dartmouth.

Transcriptions (from the right to the left) 释文(从右往左):

1. Seal Script: “Form is empty; emptiness is form.” 篆书:“色即是空,空即是色。”
2. Clerical Script: “In emptiness there is no form, sensation, cognition, formation, or awareness.” 隶书:“空中无色,无受想行识。”
3. Standard Script: “Cross beyond all suffering and affliction.” 楷书:“度一切苦厄。”
4. Cursive Script: “Keep far away from distorted dream-thinking.” 草书:“远离颠倒梦想。”
5. Running Script: “Having no impediments in his mind, he has no fear.” 行书:“无挂碍故无有恐怖。”
6. Background: The complete text of the Heart Sutra in standard script (68″ x 27.5″). 背景作品为大楷《心经》全文(173 cm x 70 cm)。

Chinese Calligraphy and Manuscript Art: The Exhibition on Its Way

The internatioal exhibition of Chinese Calligraphy and Manuscript Art will be ready in the beginning of September. This exhibition has been supported by leading calligraphers and scholars around the world. It is designed for both Dartmouth’s “Year of the Arts” and Prof. Wen Xing’s CHIN 82 “Chinese Calligraphy and Manuscript Culture: Orchid Pavilion” course. Six sections of the exciting exhibition include:

1. The Orchid Pavilion and Professor Huang Dun’s Manuscripts
2. The Heart Sutra in the Qi Style and Professor Qi Gong’s (1912-2005) Art
3. Manuscript, Sutra, and Mantra: The Heart Sutra in Five Scripts by Prof. Wen Xing
4. Pre-Classics Era: Bone, Bamboo, and Bronze Manuscripts
5. Manuscript Art in Practice: From the Orchid Pavilion to the Women’s Script
6. Chinese Calligraphy and Manuscript Art at Dartmouth and in Higher Education
