Dan Idelkope

  • Bio: Dan chose the HPSP to care for the brave people that serve our country. Both of his grandfathers proudly served in the Navy and Air Force for most of their careers, and he wishes to serve his country as they did. Dan is interested in internal medicine with a focus on primary care. He hopes to build his leadership skills and make the most of the myriad opportunities the Army has to offer.

Steven Johnson

  • Bio: Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Steven D. Johnson was born in Olympia Washington and spend his chidlhood in the Dominic Republic while his family served as missionaries. He attended high school in Fort Lauderdale, FL and was able to earn an NROTC scholarship to Norwich University. While studying Biology in college he was selected into the Navy Special Operations (EOD) Officer pipeline. Steve was initially stationed in Sigonella, Sicily and deployed to Iraq for collaborative EOD training. Upon return from deployment, he was given command of the Mine Counter-measures Platoon and participated in several NATO exercises as well as the recovery of a downed commercial aircraft (Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409). Following departure from active duty, LCDR Johnson continued his education at Old Dominion University and continues to serve in the Navy Reserves within the underwater robotics division of Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. In 2017, he became a National Science Foundation Student Research Fellow at Syracuse University/ SUNY Upstate Medical Center/ SUNY Oswego where he conducted research into PTSD symptomatology mediators in combat veterans.

Diana Lee

  • Bio: Struck by the idea of serving those who serve and their families, Diana joined the HPSP after learning about the program at one of her medical school interviews. An immigrant from South Korea, she is very grateful for the opportunities she has had in the United States and is looking forward to learning more about military medicine through her colleagues and mentors. In her free time, she likes to play video games and explore new places in New England.

Mike Sramek

  • Bio: Michael enlisted into the Military in 2009, attending basic training at Ft. Leonard-Wood, MO in January 2010. There, he was trained as a Combat Engineer (12B). He served on active duty during this time and later in the reserves where he was reclassified as a Bridge Crew Member (12C). He deployed to Afghanistan in 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he was involved in construction operations and route clearance. During his deployment, Mike was injured and received the Purple Heart. Other awards he received were: The Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Mike has a passion for leadership involving himself in the executive board student government, the Medical Education Committee, and in the leadership of the Craniofacial Clinic. He hopes to one day practice medicine as an Otolaryngologist, focusing on Head and Neck cancer.

Rick Pace

  • Bio: Rick graduated West Point in 2005 and served for over 7 years as an Infantry Officer. He then left the Army and worked in finance and logistics for a portfolio company owned by Fortress Investment Group in Miami, FL for a few years. Rick enjoyed his time in the infantry and working in Miami, but felt a desire to pursue medicine. He attended Bryn Mawr’s Post Bac Pre-medical program to complete my prerequisites before attending Dartmouth. He has rejoined the Army through HPSP. Rick looks forward to once again being a part of the Army community and serving Soldiers through the Medical Corps. Outside of studying, he enjoys taking weekend excursions with his wife to explore the local area, playing sports and visiting family and friends.

Brittney Petrina

  • Bio: Britney graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 2015 with a BS in Biology. While at the academy she competed in flying events as part of the Academy’s Precision Flying Team. After graduation, she served as a Contracting Officer at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. Britney still loves to fly and enjoys spending time outdoors.

Jake Torrey

  • Bio: Major Jake Torrey graduated from the US Military Academy with a degree in civil engineering in 2006 and commissioned into the US Army Infantry, posting to Fort Richardson, Alaska. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving as an Airborne Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader, and to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan where he commanded an Airborne Infantry Company. After five years of active duty service, Jake transitioned to the Vermont Army National Guard where he has served an additional eight years as a Dismounted Reconnaissance Troop Commander and Infantry Brigade Chief of Operations. He plans to continue his military service as a Medical Corps officer in the National Guard. After leaving active duty, Jake and his wife bought an abandoned Vermont farm and became farmers for five years, before he decided to pursue a career in medicine, attending the University of Vermont to complete premedical prerequisites. Jake and his wife have two kids and still live on their farm, keeping a garden and making maple syrup each spring.

Chad Lewis

  • Bio: Raised hearing the stories of military champions like his father who broke down racial barriers as a Tuskegee Airmen in WWII, and his cousin, Sergeant Alvin C. York, Medal of Honor recipient and one of the most highly decorated soldiers of WWI – Chad followed in their footsteps and joined the Marines weeks after the attacks on September 11, 2001. While deployed to Iraq’s “Triangle of Death” with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) from 2004 to 2005, Chad protected civilians from sectarian violence and helped secure Iraq’s first democratic elections. Soon after, he provided relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans’ St. Bernard Parish, and was awarded the Humanitarian Service Medal by the Department of Defense. As a Sergeant, Chad completed his B.S. while on active duty prior to leaving the Marines in 2007 to work as a field engineer for the Department of Homeland Security. Later inspired to pursue a career in medicine, Chad began his premedical studies at the University of Arizona in 2011. As a recipient of the Andrew F. Pleasant Scholarship for Advanced Studies in Health Literacy and Prevention, Chad also managed health promotion programs in low-income communities across the country while working under the 17th Surgeon General of the U.S., Dr. Richard Carmona. He concurrently completed a Master of Public Health at George Washington University prior to matriculating at Geisel in 2016.

  • Bio: While at Navy Ryan played forward on the hockey team and served as Vice President of the Native American Heritage Club. He enjoys spending time outdoors and in the water, reading, protecting the environment, and eating bagels.

Cole Ogrydziak

  • Bio: Cole lived in Nederland, TX most of his life but was born and raised a Coast Guard-brat in Honolulu, HI. He has three brothers, two of whom graduated alongside him at the Academy (one Signal Corps and the other Corps of Engineers) and the third who is a reliability engineer. Cole is interested in trauma, emergency, and critical care surgery.

John Rode

  • Bio: After graduating from Connecticut College, John reported to Navy Officer Candidate School and earned his commission as a Surface Warfare Officer. On active-duty, he completed two at-sea deployments as the Main Propulsion Officer onboard the USS Kidd and as the Amphibious Landing Planning Officer for Commander, Amphibious Squadron One onboard the USS Boxer. During his final tour, John served as lead-instructor and course coordinator for a class on the Tomahawk missile system. He transitioned to the Navy Reserve in 2016 and attended Bryn Mawr College’s Post-Baccalaureate Pre-medical program, graduating in 2017 and matriculating to Geisel. “By far the most rewarding responsibility the Navy gave me was that of leading the remarkable men and women who choose to serve our country. It was moments spent caring for my Sailors’ safety and well-being, and empowering them to accomplish their goals that ultimately led me to transition my career into medicine to care for others just as I had done for them.”

Zach Salas

  • Bio: Zach started his naval career enlisting in the Navy and serving as an avionics technician working on the F/A-18 Hornet.  He would later be commissioned an Ensign through the Navy’s Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1997 and earning his naval aviator wings in 1999.  Zach’s first operational tour, as a naval aviator, was flying the F/A-18C Hornet with Strike Fighter Squadron ONE FOUR SEVEN (VFA-147) “Argonauts” at NAS Lemoore, CA, from 2001 to 2003. During this tour, he completed a nine-month combat deployment onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74) with Carrier Air Wing NINE (CVW-9) and flew combat missions during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as part of the initial operations in Afghanistan, just after the attacks of 9/11. Zach then served as an F/A-18 Super Hornet flight instructor with VFA-122 “Flying Eagles” in Lemoore, CA. In 2007, he deployed again aboard the USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74), flying both Legacy and Super Hornets during combat operations in support of Operations ENDURING and IRAQI FREEDOM. In 2008, he served his Department Head tour with VFA-94 “Mighty Shrikes” and deployed to the 7th Fleet AORs twice as part of the Navy’s partnership with the Marine Corps in the UDP program, deployed to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. Zach retired in 2013 and completed a post-bacc premedical program at American University in Washington, DC before beginning at Dartmouth in the fall of 2016.  He is married with three children.

Julie Voydik

  • Bio: Julie grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and spent several months in Washington DC as a congressional intern before enlisting in the Army as a medic. Shortly after arriving at her first active duty station in Fort Campbell, KY, she deployed with the 501st Area Support Medical Company in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During this 12 month deployment, she provided medical care to US soldiers as well as Iraqi citizens and third country nationals at Camp Speicher, Al Asad airbase, and Camp Liberty. While stationed near Baghdad, she participated in a program to deliver pediatric wheelchairs to disabled Iraqi children, many of whom had congenital abnormalities and had been untreated since birth. This and many other experiences with hands-on patient care in this under-resourced environment sparked an ongoing interest in medical care for at-risk populations, especially children and infants, and led her to continue along a path towards a medical career in the civilian world. After graduating with a BS in Chemistry, she moved back to California where she spent a year working as an EMT in Santa Clara County and joined Children’s Hospital in Oakland as a member of their NICU/PICU transport team. At Geisel, her interest in high acuity medicine has deepened through research projects in pre-hospital and pediatric palliative care.  As a rising M4, she plans to apply in Emergency Medicine this fall. In her spare time, she enjoys running, squeezing in adventures (especially hiking and scuba diving), and being a hockey mom to her 7-year-old son.

Ariel Ann

  • Bio: Ariel graduated in 2014 from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy before attending Dartmouth. She superbly enjoyed her residency in Hawaii. Upon graduation, Ariel is heading to Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, TX to be part of the faculty in their family medicine program.

Michael Lauria

  • Bio: Mike started working in emergency services in 2002 as a Firefighter/EMT-I. In 2005, he graduated from Dartmouth College and enlisted in the Air Force, completed the rigorous Pararescue (PJ) training pipeline, and served at the 321st Special Tactics Squadron. During his service he deployed to OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM as the primary medic assigned to a Combat Search and Rescue Team, Joint Special Operations Task Force, and in support of C Company, 1stBattalion, 10thSpecial Forces Group (Airborne). In October 2012, he returned to New Hampshire after accepting a position as a Critical Care/Flight Paramedic for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART). Mike graduated with honors from the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine in 2018 and is currently an Emergency Medicine resident at the University of New Mexico. After residency he will go onto fellowships in EMS and Critical Care Medicine. Outside of clinical responsibilities, he writes for the EMCrit podcast, consults for various emergency service organizations, and speaks around the world on clinical human factors and improving clinical performance in stressful situations. Tommy Wilcoxon

  • Bio: Tommy is from a small town in the California Bay Area called Hayward. He originally began his college experience at Fresno State, with the hopes of becoming involved in finance/accounting. This all changed after completing his first chemistry class. After this he knew he had to pursue a career in science/medicine! He quickly changed my major to chemistry and ultimately transferred to UC Santa Barbara where he spent five years pursuing my BS in bio-chemistry. After spending 8 years in under he graduated from Geisel School of Medicine in 2018 and is near the completion of his General Surgery intern year here at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia. Although he loves the Norfolk/Portsmouth area, he is very excited to be moving to Oceanside, California in July 2019 to serve as the Battalion Surgeon for the 1st Marine Division Infantry at Camp Pendleton. He actually just returned from Kuwait/Iraq after serving as the ground combat element surgeon of SPMAGTF-CR-CC 21.1. He plans to serve as Battalion Surgeon for 2-4 years after which he plans to return to an Orthopedic Surgery Residency either in the NAVY or as a civilian. Outside of work he likes to hang out with his cat (Kiwi) and girlfriend (Alison). He is addicted to running and exercising so in his time away from work you can likely catch him running through the waterside district of Norfolk or on the Peloton Bike at his local gym.

  • Bio: I knew I wanted to come to medical school after shadowing surgeons at Walter Reed during my undergraduate years at the U.S. Naval Academy. I want the chance to work with servicemen and women, their families, and veterans and to be there to provide care when they are critically sick or injured.
