What is MDSSP?

The Medical and Dental Student Stipend Program (MDSSP) is a program that offers medical and dental students a monthly stipend of at least $2,270. In return, each participant will incur a one-year service obligation for every six months (or part thereof) for which they receive the stipend. The stipend is paid from the back end of med school forward–for example, if as an M1 you sign up for 1 year of stipend, you will receive it as an M4. If you want a stipend as an M1, you’ll need to sign up for all four years. Your obligation begins immediately following the completion of dental school or completion of your residency (once you’re board-certified), unless you enter into STRAP for residency in an eligible specialty.

If you are not in the military you will direct-commission; that process can take over six months.
