John Emery

  • Branch: Navy
  • Hometown: Mexico, NY
  • Undergrad: University of Rochester ’13
  • Bio: John was born in a VERY small town in central NY called Mexico.  Although his hometown was in the middle of New York State, John felt the call of the sea and attended the University of Rochester on a Naval ROTC scholarship.  Graduating in 2013 with a degree in microbiology, John commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy and began two years of intensive nuclear training for service as an officer on submarines.  Following his training, John served aboard the Virginia-Class fast attack submarine the USS Illinois (SSN-786).  During this time, John supervised the final stages of construction of this brand-new submarine and took her out for her very first time at sea.  Once all of the at-sea testing was complete, John sailed with the submarine through the Panama Canal to her new homeport in Pearl Harbor where he spent 7 months preparing the submarine for her maiden deployment, lounging on the beach, and surviving the great nuclear-missile threat of 2018. Following his successful tour on the USS Illinois, John returned to his home state and served as a nuclear reactor operations instructor at the Navy’s training facility in Saratoga Springs, NY.  John is very proud to have been given the privilege to serve in such a small community as submarines and looks forward to a career of continued service as (someday) a VA physician.

Pavel Zhuravlev

  • Branch: USMC/Navy HSCP
  • Hometown: Briarcliff Manor, NY
  • Undergrad: College of William and Mary
  • Bio: I was born into a family of physicians in what is now St. Petersburg, Russia, but raised in the NYC suburbs. I entered New York University with every expectation of pursuing medicine along the typical path, but my quixotic side got the better of me. I transferred to the College of William and Mary launching a decade of acts of rebellious self-actualization. The Marine Corps got me with that commercial where some average joe defeats a Balrog—everyone thinks it’s a dragon—to be transformed into a Marine in dress blues. As it turns out, there is a compelling reason that the root of the word officer is office. This time included a stint on Okinawa, an Air Force vacation on Al Udeid, and a year of recruit training on Parris Island. Still searching, I resumed my scholarly pursuits at the University of Colorado Law School; my very own western Walden. I can now think about a thing inextricably tied to another thing without thinking about the thing it is tied to. I hereby promise to never do this in my medical career. At some point during M1, I decided I like the military so much I signed up again.
