Exporting Your Site

Exporting Content

At some point, you may wish to move your site off of Dartmouth WordPress and import it to a different platform (or another WordPress site). For example, if you leave Dartmouth, your NetID will no longer be active and you will not be able to log into your site. If you would like to keep your Dartmouth WordPress site, you should export it while your NetID is still active.

To export your site, go to Tools > Export from the Dashboard.

This will download a special file to your computer that can then be uploaded to another WordPress site, or possibly other platforms.

Please note: The Export function will only export posts, pages, comments, terms, and menus from your site. It will not export featured images, themes, plugins, or any special functionality provided by plugins. Furthermore, the export file contains only links to images, not the actual images themselves. This means that the export of images will only work while your Dartmouth site still exists and is visible to the public.

Exporting Media

As noted in the previous paragraph, the export of images can sometimes be challenging if the original site is no longer available. Because of that, we recommend that you use the Bulk Media Downloader plugin to make a copy of all the media stored on your website: images, videos, PDF documents, etc. To use the plugin go to the Plugins menu, and activate it in the list of Available Plugins. Once activated, a new "Bulk Select" item will be available in the Media Library menu. Further details are provided in the CampusPress knowledgebase.

Making a Copy of Your Website

What if you don't want to keep your website, or export it to another platform, but you would still like to keep a copy? You can do this by making a "static copy" of the site using tools such as HTTrack or SiteSucker. You can also contact us and we can make a copy for you.

The copy we provide will have all your website content, and will look just like your site. It will not however be fully functional. The search function (for example) won't work. But you will be able to view your site on your computer, and be reassured that you have a reference copy.

It is also possible to convert your website to a printable PDF file using the free BlogBooker online service. Detailed instructions are available here in the CampusPress knowledgebase.
