Here’s a little material tangent inspired from a Twitter posting by Dr. Charlotte (Charlie) Berry (@stickybears), postdoctoral researcher at the REED Civic London project.
I saw this tweet back in January: https://twitter.com/stickybears/status/1217081672358879232?s=20
The image of the book cover struck me immediately for its similarity to the cover of the Dartmouth Brut when it arrived in 2006:
London Metropolitan Archive Dartmouth College, Rauner Library
CLC/L/TC/D/008/MS06155/001 MS 003183
A little digging turned up the shelfmark and brief description as an account book of the Tallow Chandlers’ Guild.
The Brut cover has already been identified as a “tacket binding” associated with merchants’ account books. Connecting this cover to an actual surviving account book is a nice addition to the documentation!
Another great tweet about this binding style!
