Overview:
ImproveCareNow started at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and is an example when the “experience” of young people with inflammatory bowel diseases has been integral to the development of a learning health network. This network has been wildly successful in their efforts to improve health.

Øystein Fjeldstad and Paul Batalden have been studying the development of the network for the past few years by interviews, observations and participant feedback. They have distilled dozens of interviews and hours of interaction with persons sometimes called “patients,” “family members,” “professionals,” and “leaders.” They wish to offer their insight into its development and operation.

To make it easier to understand, they have created a simple model of what it took to make it work: Actors, Context, Practices and a shared Aim. This model and their efforts are summarized in this presentation so that others may learn from them and the context out of which these efforts came. Discussion will include reflections on how this work and the Cincinnati Children’s example intersects with Care Experience, the Beryl Institute model for Human Experience, how experience is becoming an even greater and more critical component of quality, and how their new leadership model may be of practical value in today’s resource constrained healthcare landscape. A group of panel members will offer their reactions, questions after a brief presentation.
