Importing into Your Site

Perhaps you have an existing blog or other website that you would like to move over to Dartmouth WordPress. If your site is in a supported blogging platform, you can move the content of your existing site over relatively easily, rather than copying and pasting pages one by one. Supported blogging tools include: WordPress, Blogger, Blogroll, LiveJournal, Movable Type, TypePad, and RSS. For WordPress, please be sure to select the "Advanced WordPress" option from the top of the list.

To import your blog from one of these other platforms, go to Tools > Import from the dashboard and select your platform. The process is different for each, and you will be guided through.

You will be asked to map users from your old blog to users on your new site. Pages and posts must be assigned to a user with a NetID username on sites.dartmouth.edu. Users without NetIDs will not be able to login to the system. It is easiest to create your create your users on your sites.dartmouth.edu website first, and then map posts and pages to them. But, if you forget, this can be done after the fact. If you have any questions or would like help with the import process, please contact us.

Please note that the theme, plugins and other custom functionality from your existing blog will not be imported. Generally, only posts, pages, categories and authors will be preserved. Images are usually imported, but it is best to check after the import is done to see if they have all been imported. If for some reason the import failed for certain images, it will be necessary to upload them individually back in to the website.
