Welcome back to Dartmouth! As you might have noticed, there was a large pile of snow on the Green waiting here to greet you. But that’s okay, in the next couple of weeks, the spring will bring warmer weather, more sunshine, and awesome memories.

Spring term is a favorite for many Dartmouth students. Maybe it’s because we don’t need a parka to step outside our dorms anymore, or maybe it’s because the sunshine just makes everyone happier – whatever the reason, you’re going to enjoy this term!

Here are 10 tips for a fun and academically strong spring term!

  1. Set an academic goal for yourself. Looking to do better this spring term? Consider setting an academic goal for yourself. Research indicates that setting short-term goals can increase your academic performance. Remember to use a Growth Mindset when setting these goals too!
  2. Eat out on Collis Patio. It will finally be warm enough to eat outside again! Order your favorite omelet/stir fry and enjoy the view of the Green.
  3. Keep shopping for classes. Didn’t get into your first-choice class? Need instructor permission? Try to sit in on the class during the first week – a spot may open up, or the professor, after seeing how persistent you’ve been, might just open a spot for you!
  4. Get to know your professors. Professors can be really cool people! Make the effort to visit your professors during office hours. You might find out they share a similar hobby/interest, or maybe they’re doing research on a project that you can assist with. Spring term is a great time to build these connections – who knows, it might lead to a summer research opportunity!
  5. Go canoeing. As soon as the Connecticut River thaws out, visit the Ledyard Canoe Club to rent a canoe with your friends. It’s one of the most relaxing things to do at Dartmouth.
  6. Ditch the parka for your trunks/swimsuit. In addition to canoeing, swimming in the Connecticut is a must do for the spring term. Check out the rope swing and make a splash!
  7. Study outside. Why read inside when you can read on the Green! Research shows that exposure to natural sunlight can improve your academic performance.
  8. Make time for friends. This one might seem obvious, but too often, we let our busy schedules get in the way of what’s really important – our friendships. Set aside time each weekend to make memories with your friends. These special moments will not only renew your spirit, but also reduce stress and prevent burnout.
  9. Visit a company info session. Thinking about consulting, finance, tech, or non-profit work? A lot of companies visit Dartmouth during the spring to host info sessions. Try to visit a few of these info sessions to help develop your career aspirations!
  10. Most importantly, visit the ASC! Whether you need peer tutoring, academic counseling, or a person to talk to. We’re here for you!
