Training

Training for our student assistants begins the first few shifts that you work. If it’s possible for students to come in earlier, we try to accommodate that as well. The library supervisor usually does the training along with the detailed checklist in hand. Training consists of a walk-through of the library to become familiar with where things are, one-on-one training with the library supervisor on the automated circulation system, hands on training on the Library Catalog, and completion of a computer program to learn the Library of Congress classification system. The first term there will be ongoing training aided by a set of Library Core Competency Quizzes on Canvas, which are open book. The object in addition to learning procedures is to know how to look things up! The quizzes are spread over six weeks of the term. You are encouraged to ask questions whenever necessary.

It is the individual’s responsibility to keep up with these quizzes and to ask questions as needed.
