Summary: This miniseries is based on Machado de Assis’s novel Dom Casmurro. The story is told by Bento, the narrator and protagonist, about his relationship with his childhood friend Capitu. The story begins with their teenage years and how they developed a romantic relationship despite the fact that Bento’s mother promised God that her son would become a priest. As the story progresses, Bento’s relationship with Capitu becomes complicated when the image he has of Capitu differs from reality.
This miniseries is one of the best Brazilian miniseries I have seen. The director took several liberties with the story of Dom Casmurro by Macahdo de Assis, but this only made the story relatable to its audience. There are several elements of modernism and Victorianism, making it a unique adaptation while at the same time remaining faithful to the book.
