Summary:

Five award winning films by Brazilian directors; Ilha das flores and A morte no edifício império are documentaries, the rest are fictional.Originally produced as motion pictures.

Ilha das flores explores the human disaster of poverty. Follows the journey of a tomato through planting, harvesting, being sold at a supermarket, rotting and ending up in the trash. But that is not the end, “its real end [is] among animals, trash, women and children. And then the difference between tomatoes, pigs, and human beings becomes clear”–Cf. publisher’s web site.

In No amor, “a group of craftspeople sell wallets, belts, bags and sandals in a downtown street, but the production is disorganized and not very lucrative. A young entrepreneur decides to invest in the kids, he splits them into work gangs and reduces their free time. In exchange he offers them a great place to live. The ‘firm’ starts making a profit, but the workers’ earnings are still poor”–Cf. publishers website.

Passageiros tells the story of “a typical robber, a typical taxi driver, [and] a typical route in the Porto Alegre night, from the bus station to a quiet street. But when the robbery is to take place, the driver does not react as expected. In the meantime, on TV, the Justice Minister is making a speech against violence”–Cf. publishers web site.

A morte no edifício império “is a film about the historical-architectural heritages of the city of Porto Alegre. Passages about the cityscapes from books by … Érico Veríssimo, Dyonélio Machado, August Saint-Hilaire and Souza Brandão are illustrated with contemporary images [of] permanence and change in the city’s streets and buildings”–Cf. publishers website.

In Ângelo anda sumido two old friends meet after a long separation and plan to have dinner, but then separate and loose each other in the labyrinth of fences, walls, and iron gates of a large city–Cf. publishers website.
